Prerequisite(s)

None. This course, combined with the physics portion of physical science will complete 1 science credit towards graduation.

Course Description and Overview of Content

In this course, we will be covering the chemistry half of physical science. Topics include the scientific method, chemical bonds, chemical and physical changes, atomic structure, and chemical reactions.

Course Goal/Intended Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will have a solid background in the chemistry portion of physical science. Students will follow this course with the physics portion of physical science or biology to fulfill science graduation requirements.

Textbook and/or Other Materials

The textbook for this course is Physical Science. Students must have a notebook, writing utensil, and binder/folder on a daily basis.

Format and Activities

Each lesson will review previous concepts. Students will work cooperatively performing labs and completing other hands-on activities. Student attendance and daily participation will be extremely important to the learning process and success in the classroom.

Grading Practices and Procedures

Grades will be determined using the following:

·         tests

·         classwork/homework

Semester grades will be determined using the following percentages:

·         80% MP 1, 2, & 3 (or 4, 5, & 6)

·         20% final exam

Attendance/Tardiness

·         Students are tardy if they are not in the door when the bell rings (handled according to student handbook)

·         Assignments due to absence are due the number of absence days, plus one day, upon return to school

·         Students are responsible for obtaining their missed assignments

·         Students absent on a test day should expect to take the test upon their return

Classroom Rules and Procedures

Students are expected to be prepared and participate on a daily basis. Proper classroom behavior is expected to ensure success of students and provide an environment where all students are able to learn. Any student impeding the learning of others will go through progressive discipline.

Students who act irresponsibly (not observing the safety rules) during laboratory activities will be removed from the lab and lose that portion of their grade.

Hall passes:  each student will receive 6 hall passes per semester. Hall passes are for emergencies only. It is advisable that students use the passing time to attend to personal needs.

Late Work Policy

Assignments turned in late will receive a maximum credit of 75%. After the completion of a unit, students will have one week to turn in their late work. After that, it will not be accepted.

Technology Usage

Online activities will occasionally be used in class. All students must have an AUP on file with the media center. Cell phones should not be used during class, unless otherwise specified.

Academic Integrity/Cheating

Students will be placed in groups for the purpose of learning cooperatively. Their tests and written work, however, are expected to be their own. Students cheating or unfairly assisting other students during a test will lose all credit on that test. Students may cooperate on labs and converse about lab write-ups, but they may not copy each other’s work. If caught copying another student’s work, both students will not receive credit for that assignment.
