Course Description and Overview of Content:

Algebra is the first course in the traditional college preparation mathematics program for students interested in a higher level of learning and understanding. Algebra can be considered to be the language of mathematics. The course will integrate geometry, statistics, and probability into algebra. The course will emphasize reading and real-life problem solving and make use of the latest technology.

Course Goal/Intended Outcomes:

Students will be able to apply the foundations described in the course description to real life situations. Students will be able to recognize patterns in data and use these patters to problem solve. Units covered include: Algebra Basics, Linear Models, Quadratic Models

Texts and/ or Other Materials

Text: Algebra (Reveal McGraw-Hill). We will use ALEKS for homework.
Materials needed: Notebook (100+ pages), pencils, ruler, and calculator.

Format and Activities:

Teacher will:  Lecture, lead whole class discussions, facilitate small and large group activities, and provide assistance on class-work, and administer appropriate assessments. 

Students will:  Take notes, participate in individual and whole-class activities and ask questions to clarify understanding of material. Students should also be prepared to complete homework and study for quizzes and tests on a regular basis.

Grading Practices and Procedures:

Semester Grade: Semester grades will be calculated using the following weights:

  • 15% Assignments and Participation
  • 35% Quizzes
  • 50% Tests
  • 10% Semester Exam

Interim grades are a reflection of the student’s semester grade to date.

GRADING SCALE: The grading scale for Algebra I is as follows:
A = 100%-93%; A- = 92-90; B+ = 89-87; B = 86-83; B- = 82-80; C+ = 79-77; C = 76-73; C- = 72-70; D+ = 69-67; D = 66-63; D- = 62-60; E = Below 60
Unless excused, late work will receive no credit.

Attendance/Tardiness:

Regular class attendance, participation, and homework completion are the key to learning and being successful in mathematics.

TARDIES: See the Student Handbook for details. Tardies will be addressed through the MINGA system, so make sure you have MINGA on your Chromebook and phone

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

  • All school rules from the student handbook apply in this classroom.
  • Be responsible. (Bring your materials, do your work, study!)
  • Be polite, respectful, and tolerant of others.
  • No food or drinks are allowed to be consumer in the room. They are to be consumed in the cafeteria or commons only. Food or drink will be thrown away by the teacher, if needed.
  • Get enough sleep at home, so that you are well rested and can stay awake in class.
  • Stay in your seat until the bell rings. Lining up at the door is not permitted.
  • Students are responsible for collecting makeup work when absent. The best method is to copy someone’s notes from the day of your absence. In the event that assignments or quizzes or tests are missed, they MUST be made up before/after school within one or two days, as specified (only if absence is excused). Otherwise, late assignments are not accepted.
  • When entering the classroom, immediately and quietly wait for the bell or complete the “Warm-ups.”
  • Students who have missed class are to check the absent work folder for the handouts under their names.
  • Behave like mature students, respecting everyone. Immature, improper, and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated and will result in a phone call home and/or referral to the office.
  • Other procedures—such as asking for help, turning in homework, leaving one’s seat, seating arrangements, group work, etc.—will be discussed in class and are expected to be followed.
  • All assignments and assessments must be written only in pencil and in the format that the teacher demonstrates and specifies.

Academic Integrity:

Although students are encouraged to help each other with math, all students must ultimately do their own work. Cheating or copying another student's work will not be tolerated. Any deviation from this will result in loss of credit for the particular work for both parties involved and a referral to the office for disciplinary action. Talking during quizzes and tests to anyone other than the teacher about anything will result in a grade of zero on the assessment.

Technology Usage:

It is recommended that students have a scientific calculator available for homework. There are several inexpensive models available (TI-30 or TI-34). For an even more versatile calculator, consider purchasing the Texas Instruments TI-84 graphing calculator.
